ion, to be conceptually interesting and also sensual, to balance the Apollonian and the Dionysian. Whether I succeeded in these artistic aims it is hard for me to say and in truth it is difficult to evaluate one's own work. Certainly though, in the course of this project I challenged my own conception of the trumpet and succeeded in finding new ways to broaden my practice using extended trumpet techniques, trumpet preparations and laptop electronics while also connecting with my own history with the instrument: a learning based in jazz, rooted in melodic expression and a mode of improvising coming from, to use George Lewis's term, an "Afrological" (2004) paradigm. In this way most of all I feel satisfied with Allotrope: it brings together, somehow, my musical history with my story and my sense of now. I am engaging with contemporary conceptions of the instrument, with ideas about what jazz can be, with my culture as I

Beyond colour perception: Auditory–visual synaesthesia induces experiences of geometric objects in specific locations

Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent vi...

The Colour of Music: Real-time Music Visualisation with Synaesthetic Sound-colour Mapping

Multimodality is integrated into the majority of our multimedia experiences, most commonly with intent. However, some experience an unintentional, and subjective perceptual response to a stimulus in another sensory domain due to the neurological phenomena synaesthesia. This paper discusses the application of music-colour synaesthetic mappings in live ensemble performance. A succinct discourse o...

The 11th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC’08) ITERATIVE DATA-AIDED SYNCHRONIZATION FOR MULTIUSER ULTRA-WIDEBAND SIGNALS

We propose an iterative synchronizer for chip-interleaved timehopping multiuser ultra-wideband signals subject to intersymbol interference (ISI). The novelty of the design is that it is a soft-input soft-output synchronizerwhich enables to exploit the performance gains of iterative multiuser detection and equalization techniques. The performance of the synchronizer is visualized with simulation...

Special Issue Do Synaesthetic Colours Act as Unique Features in Visual Search?

For individuals with grapheme-colour synaesthesia, letters, numbers and words elicit vivid and highly consistent colour experiences. A critical question in determining the mechanisms underlying the phenomenon is whether synaesthetic colours arise early in visual processing, prior to the allocation of focused attention, or at some later stage following explicit recognition of the inducing form. ...

An investigation of the cognitive and perceptual dynamics of a colour-digit synaesthete.

L, a 47-year-old female of Choctaw descent, was first identified as a potential synaesthetic++ on the basis of self-report data regarding digit-colour associations. Upon completion of the identification procedures typified in the literature, it was concluded that L met the classic memory-performance criteria used to identify synaesthetic ability. A series of Stroop-type tasks were then performe...
